Adolescence.   A time for trying on personalities, being impressed and trying to impress, time when hours are devoted to the experiment and practice of facial expressions – smiles, frowns, questioning raised eyebrows or hard stares of rejection – in order to more confidently pilot one’s way through a crowd, a group of one’s peers or past that one and only person you need so badly to impress.

And the walk, the walks which vary according to situation, the wriggle, the self-conscious, the don’t-look-at-me-I’ve-got-my-period and, ever-decreasingly, the spontaneous, just for the pleasure of it, run along a beach enjoying the feel of air on skin.   And for boys there’s the hands-in-pocket, S bend slouch which can instantly be transformed to chin-jutting prefect-with attitude in the presence of someone a year or more younger
