REFLECTING

I’ll keep this short. I tried the longer version, the one with all the details, the minute-by-minute account, but it proved a frustrating waste of time, and I ended up talking to myself in an empty room.Maybe I should’ve remained the devout skeptic I’d been since birth. Yet, what I saw, I saw. I’m not crazy. I didn’t drink. Not then. I don’t toy with drugs that might’ve altered my mind to seeing what wasn’t there. How could I deny what I witnessed? The dresser and the mirror in the attic. In my…See More

SO AS NOT TO CRY

A mother hides the last letter from her son. She puts it in a drawer beneath his last photograph where he’s dressed in his uniform and if you could believe his face, his smile, you would swear that handsome son could never die. Although sometimes she thinks that he is walking in the kitchen or he calls her name from the door, what does she have? Only two memories and she saves them forever hidden in a chest of drawers. At this place the mother prays as if It were a shrine without candles or…See More

WE ALL ATE THERE

My students sat mesmerized as I recounted one of my childhood stories. It seemed to calm them down when they got overly rambunctious and teaching an actual lesson seemed a waste of time and breath. So what I would do was weave into the lesson a childhood memory. For example, teaching a grammar lesson on the dangling participle, I said, “When I was four, my older brother Alphonse dangled me by the wrists over the cemetery wall next to our house, threatening to drop me into the waiting arms of…See More

MIDDLE-OF-THE-NIGHT DELIVERY

“What do I do now with these pizzas bin Laden ordered?”

Aslam the Pizza man stands at the compound door, thumping his sandaled left foot to unheard music. Behind him assemble the Abbottabad crowd. They have heard about Osama bin Laden’s demise and have come to ogle for themselves this now empty hideaway fortress they previously thought was an abandoned school for unwed mothers.

One of them, an undertaker and part-time gravedigger from downtown, stands behind Aslam,…

BILL

Homeless Bill. It broke our hearts to see him rummaging the garbage hopper behind Burger King for thrown-away, uneaten, left-behind scraps of buns, some fries, small chunks of beef.

We’d drive by and there he’d be, dragging an ulcerated leg of festering sores, a makeshift cane in one hand, while the other hand clutched tightly at his throat the collar of his torn green flannel shirt.

One early winter evening at a red light, I turned…

RASH

How long’s it take to have a baby? Carlos wondered. No news yet and he’d been sitting in St. Clara’s waiting room close to six hours. During each of those hours, he had watched new fathers come and go. Come on, Jacinta. My bony ass is numb on this wooden chair. Show me the baby!

Then one more hour slipped by. Carlos had enough caffeine in him from coffee and soda pop he figured the baby would have no trouble keeping him up into…

Oh you know I am a sucker for flattery! Now if I could just get over my writer's block for today's prompt...ok, maybe that's what the piece will be on.

actually I'm not big on the "friend" thing but you have a filter on your profile that only allows friends to send you messages. I wanted to tell you that I read the side piece you mentioned and now I feel horrible, I don't think I follow any of the basic rules of flash! But good to have you on board!

Welcome Sal, a heroic entrance, proving that a writer in distress commands the attention of the masses. Looking forward to your first flash.

The photo addition acted funny for me as well - the site is very specific about the format and it will not show the picture (even as a preview) until you save changes to your page. Then it took a minute or two for it to update on mine page after that.

Hopefully that helped some, if not, we'll have to wait for Blake to check in.
