"Hi Blake! I haven't been on either 6S or T 10 for awhile, because I did a 6 week online Writer's Bootcamp. I needed to pare down my online social networking presence to dedicate myself to my actual novel-writing.   What works for me…"

Ed Strand commented on Kate Cone's blog post The Damage was Done
"What a remarkable piece of work this is! Every included detail aids in furnishing the scene, creating a perfect funereal atmosphere. When that last part comes around, it is such a shock, disturbing the peace and breaking into the mourners'…"

"Kate, yes. It's a terrific scene. I never saw that coming, the wind-up I mean. The scene is alive with sights and sounds of the now, and the history fits right in to create a nice balance. Oh, my! Crows as accomplices! I have to say it again, I…"

"Thank you guys....that last line ran through my head as I lay down to sleep the other night. I've been trying to think of an ending to my novel, so I can work backward from there. Is that a good last scene?"

The Damage was Done

I stood, we all stood, stiff as the massive high pines skirting the cemetary. These are the Bowdoin pines, one-hundred feet tall and twice as many years old, once reserved for the King before Maine severed its ties to England. A mast agent would come to your land, mark the trees ideal for outfitting the schooners that plied trade to and from England and its colonies. No one liked the mast agent. No one of us liked being here, in late September cold, yellow and red leaves tripping across the…See More

About Me
I have lots of education and no money. Oh, and a huge student loan for said education. But more than that, I have three amazing kids who actually love me. Well, they say they love me, but it could only to get a big inheritance. Oh, I forgot. I don't have anything to leave them, except their good looks, which I'm pretty sure they got from me. This is meant glibly....

Bumpkin in Brooklyn

The woman who looked like she knew how to cook a good hearty meal rummaged through her purse first. The rest of us looked at the floor, squirmed, sent each other sly gazes.

"....from the bottom of my heart. My name is Lamont," he said loudly and clearly too. His voice pleaded from the first syllable and never let up. "I have just been released from prison. I am homeless, and I am sick." "Prison," "homeless" and "sick" bounced off the windows like birds fooled by the…

Excerpt: No One to Bury

They were black or brown, back then. Eamon longed for white ones, along with white high-top Converse sneakers. The boys played basketball in the basement of the church, and eventually, as Father got interested in the sport, on the outdoor court in good weather. What Eamon lacked in height, he gained in physical strength. He was short, but tough and he let fly many an elbow and got caught hardly ever.

"White as communion," Eamon would say after a game, bragging to Joe about the laces… Continue

Seeing Things

He had one blue eye and one green, like a siamese cat or a Siberian husky. Rarely did people not notice, in fact when he first met someone, he or she inevitably looked from eye to eye, deciding which one they might direct their introduction to. "I'm Lulu, she'd say, darting her own dark browns left and right, blue to green.

He could tell whether the different colors would be a deal-breaker on a first date.

Last Saturday, the woman he met sipped her Johnny Walker on the rocks with… Continue

Hi Kate! Nice to meet you. Regarding the story, I think the author was planning to shock the reader by revealing the nature of the star. The effect is not the same if the reader is not a Christian, since the reader must believe in the Christian nativity story. It was a different time then too, so perhaps it was a lot more shocking then than now?
