T10 World:
Finding a strong, dedicated, and passionate community online is difficult. Each of you contributed to making ThinkingTen a force in the creative writing online space and I am determined to ensure we continue on well into the future. I want this to be a place you can always come to to practice your craft and get in the reps you need in order to take your talent to new levels.
Let's innovate; let's brainstorm; let's take T10 to the next level
My motto: ambition drenched in simplicity. With this motto in mind, let's think of ways to ensure ThinkingTen continues to meet your needs. I want to throw out a question and I ask it with nothing but respect: can you think of an ways that we might be able to compliment 6S? I admire the site; I admire the community; I admire the NYC creator. However, I have always felt like it was missing something. I was never able to put my finger on it, so I decided to build ThinkingTen. I just want to throw that out there because I truly believe that both can exist in the same space.
Ideas? Feedback?

Permalink Reply by Julia Davies on March 6, 2011 at 2:42am I'm not really a 'prompt' person - I've said it in several places but I'm a vomit writer... things go into my head and simmer around for a while before being splurged back out to the world. The daily prompts preclude this as I must need longer than a day to think about something. The weekly capstone doesn't work for me because I already feel like I'm 'behind' from not having done one of the daily prompts (although I do know this isn't the way it has to work)
I'm not sure it fits with the 10 minute ethos but I would like to see a longer time period for a prompt - the canvas challenge does address this, but mostly the pictures have not been all that inspiring - perhaps a selection of pictures and/or words?
Another thing that 6S does/did successfully was the sister site - where pieces were submitted and judged. In the beginning this confused me, as I thought the ringmaster would be reading the stuff in 6S social and picking a piece to feature (this happens for example on poetrycircle - a group of editors choose the poems they like & move them to a 'picks' page) - I think this would also prompt more comments, promote more participation - everyone like the feeling that they have been selected due to merit (although I realise it is likely to be time consuming - perhaps you could share this by choosing some "editors assistants" from the regular contributors?)
well, that's my two-penneth ;)
oh, and I think the groups is a fabulous idea ;) could we have one for images, or perhaps visual poems/prose?
Permalink Reply by Blake N. Cooper on March 6, 2011 at 3:32pm Hi Blake! I haven't been on either 6S or T 10 for awhile, because I did a 6 week online Writer's Bootcamp. I needed to pare down my online social networking presence to dedicate myself to my actual novel-writing.
What works for me is to use your daily prompts as a jump-start to the novel. So the last few posts I did involved that project.
I'm trying to find a way to justify using these sites, when I can't print out the stuff I write so I can re-post it into my novel document on Works. So I think that's why I haven't posted. Just trying to keep the novel moving.
As for the Like button. I liked it. Here's why. I DO get on Facebook at least once a day, because it's where my kids "talk" to me, send me links to music, etc. So if I see a "like" I'll think to get on T10 to be more involved. Plus it connects T10 to the "outer" social network of Facebook and Twitter, 2 powerhouses we writers can't ignore, if we hope to get into the readers' consciousnesses. Kate
Permalink Reply by Kristine_ES on March 6, 2011 at 9:41am Fledgling chiming in... FOR SHAME I haven't been here as often as I should. Can't believe how much writing I was doing by the T10 prompts; however, I was doing it at work during the slow season when the boss wouldn't notice. Now that things have picked up at work I'll adjust my schedule to fit 6S and T10... IT CAN BE DONE!
I have T10 "liked" on my Facebook, but I don't see updates on my newsfeed.. either my settings are askewy or there's not much activity on the T10 page? I can suggest the site to a couple of friends to see if they want to try their hand.
Next level? Not sure. I've no experience managing a website or kickstarting something into action. It would depend on what you and your members want/need. Gita's suggestion for publicity is a good one. Has T10 been in Writer's Digest magazine? Anyway, I'm just happy you're here and feel fortunate to come and read and be inspired by what goes on here.
Permalink Reply by Jimmy Jimmy on March 7, 2011 at 7:22am I'll give you my thoughts.
T10 is very writer friendly and for myself, the prompts are an invaluable source of inspiration to enable me to practise my prose. I realise that my pieces are few and far between, and I may go a number of weeks with nothing doing, but knowing that T10 is here is strangely comforting. With regards the prompts, i think that a less rigid structure may allow for the prompts to be come easier for you (i believe you stated that take it away tuesday became more difficult for you as the year progressed), and also allows for the writer to interpret the prompt in more ways (although i don't actually think this is an issue). In all honesty, i really like the site, and feel that with anything like this people will come and go, or dip in occasionally as it is the nature of the beast.
Please, please, please keep up the good work, and i will try and submit more pieces (although i try and do them at work so it isn't always easy with people peering over your shoulder!)
Much Love

Permalink Reply by Thomas Winslow on March 7, 2011 at 1:37pm I have not been on t-10 in ages nor even in my e-mail in a week hence my delay in reply. S and t10 are the first places to publish anything I wrote and I was very proud and happy about it.
I have not written in over a month not because of a lack of something to write nor even because of any issue with the communities . they are great . I have checked out a few others and been confused by the odd responses to flash and perceptions . the communities of 6s and thinking 10 are fine because the great writers greet and treat new folks with genuine criticism and respect it makes it work .
One thing that I have noticed with 6s is that people tend to post fiction and non fiction alike on current events as well as holidays it keeps a day to day living flow to the site be it an oil spill or a spate of vet stories near veterans day (many excellent pieces on that)
maybe in addition to weekly prompts have a "side bar" of prompts for those who want something more in a prompt a list of current events to submit under or human conditions/emotions
teresa does a lot of non fiction on her general life that generates waves of responses at 6s because it brings out the how do you responnd to this? kind of questions and comments
as for me the last time I posted anywhere (not here or 6s) the lovely advice I got mirrored my parents and brothers when i said i had you guys publish something "thats cute but learn to ride a segueway and become a mall cop or something that pays cause if you had any talent an agent would look at your stuff."
ah no matter I do feel privileged to be able to post alongside some great talent here and 6s even if I can not match it.

Permalink Reply by Cath Barton on March 16, 2011 at 12:23pm I d apologise for being inactive on T10 for a while, and for not even catching up on this discussion till now. I really do appreciate what the site offers, Blake, and I really like prompts. So why did I stop writing? I could offer excuses about being busy, but that wouldn't be quite honest - there seemed to be fewer and fewer people writing regularly, and commenting. While I think I should be content to write for the practice, I have to admit that I really really like to get comments, and somehow that was happening less and less.
So, it's good to read that people are interested in a resurgence, and what with the uncertainties around Rob's absence from 6S, all the more important that we make good use of what is on offer here. I shouldn't say we, because I'm not trying to speak for anyone else, but this discussion is giving me the impetus to get writing here again, so I'm going to do that right now!!
Permalink Reply by alisa rynay haller on May 3, 2011 at 4:52pm well this is a tad late but here goes: 6S is it's own site, I was an avid participater and then I wasn't. I had my reasons. I enjoy this site so much more and I think it stands on it's own. Yes, I've been absent. I'm back. To even put out the question that 2 literary sites should be able to coexist answers it's own question I think. We travel in packs. Pack members don't always agree on things, and so they split. If 2 sites don't jive it's just pack differential, and maybe that is how it should be.
